Talking Kitchens, Bathrooms & Renovations: What Are The Most Popular Splashback Finishes?

When it comes to splashbacks in modern kitchen renovations, the most popular options you can choose from are mirrored, glass, stone and tile. 

Stone has always been a popular splashback material and it still is today. And right now what we’re seeing is glass has spread its wings a little bit. There’s a whole variety of different ways of doing glass, and we have also found that tiles are making a huge comeback. 

There’s a lovely range of tiles that are out there today and new ways of using tiles which is interesting and provides some attractive options.

And now, of course, there is the glass/stone splashback you can have going up the wall which can either be a complementary stone or it can be a matching stone to the benchtop. 

So with all this in mind, let’s take a look now at the most popular splashback options:

Mirrored Splashbacks

One of the key benefits of mirrored splashbacks is that they can make the space feel a bit bigger. This is great if you have a lovely garden out the back, as you can look at the mirrored splashback and the garden is reflected back into the room. This just gives a nice feeling to the space. 

However, mirrored splashbacks are not necessarily the most popular. The main problem you do have with them is obviously everything is reflected. This can sometimes work against you.

Glass Splashbacks

Glass came out on the market with a big bang about 15 years ago and suddenly everyone was having glass, it was really amazing. This meant tiles almost got pushed into the background like they didn’t exist. 

As an example, one of the more conventional glass splashbacks is where there is a white painted piece of glass. This allowed the white to simply be juxtaposed against, say, a stone background and the cabinets above that might be a contrasting colour such as grey for instance.

However, in principle, there’s 30,000 colours in the Dulux range so you don’t just have to go for white. You can have any colour you want and it’s a great way to do a modern kitchen.

One big benefit of glass is it’s much easier to keep this clean than any other splashback that you can get. With splashes of oil or grease coming off the hot plate, all you need to do is simply spray, wipe and clean, no problem. 

Stone Splashback

The next splashback to look at is a stone splashback. A really good example of this is a Dekton porcelain bench, in which you can then have a Dekton porcelain splashback going up the wall. 

This shows the veins of the stone and is really becoming a pretty popular way of doing a splashback, particularly when you’ve got a strong vein in the stone. It’s nice to run those veins up the wall behind the splashback as well. 

Tile Splashback

Tiles are another thing which have made a big comeback in the last two years or so. One great example of a more modern tile finish is the herringbone tile which is very pretty, very soft, and much more modern than the old way which was a subway or just tiles laid horizontally and vertically on a wall. 

Herringbone creates a bit of movement for the eye as the tile shape is a lovely, long and elongated tile. There’s lots of really beautiful tiles out there now and we can use them to create a number of different visual effects in a kitchen.
